Absorbing : Vividly Written and Impossible to Forget
The short story can be a powerful form of prose fiction and Verge Le Noir’s Shell Casings is certainly testament to that. An absorbing anthology of crime stories infused with irreverent sophisticated comic flair .They can be enjoyed separately or in cohesive order ,each embraces the human condition leaving a taste of distorted morality behind . Somehow both complex and spare these tales sparkle with a sense of the new while paying homage to the chieftains of pulpy crime noir. Satisfying and written with integrity and inspiration . 5 out of 5 stars

With a name like Verge Le Noir, I had to give this author a test drive. I’m very glad I did. This collection of short stories was phenomenal! The writing is excellent, the characters so real I thought they were lurking in my house somewhere (usually not a comforting suspicion), the dialogue absolutely true to life (pretty much the low life of Elmore Leonard and Charles Bukowski) and fun, the stories themselves original and entertaining. This author is extremely talented and his work belongs on the NYT best sellers list. I can’t say crime and thrillers is something I regularly read. I’ve done some sampling, writers like Baldacci, Koontz, Fleming, Smith, Follett. I’m no expert but from what I’ve seen, Le Noir blows them all away. I see he has a full-length novel called Desperados. If it’s as good as Shell Casings, I’m very much looking forward to reading it. 5 out of 5 stars.

I derive a lot of reading pleasure from trying books and stories from authors that are – shall we say – less well known. Verge Le Noir would probably fall into that category. A bit of Amazon browsing last year had me coming across his first story collection – Black Pills & Red Bullets – a collection I took a punt on and enjoyed. His second collection is even stronger. 11 stories weighing in at 140-odd pages, I raced through the collection in a day and a half – finishing off whilst my wife and daughter were walking the glass platform at Tower Bridge in London. Laughing like a drain at Suburban Postcard – drew me some funny looks from the rest of the tourists! Violence, sex, revenge, robbery, racism, murder, food and more all laced with touches of black humour. A scene in Black Day still has me chuckling when a couple of cops visit a biker gang’s clubhouse and the dude on the door is reading the author’s first book! Highly recommended, with not a dud in the bunch. The other standouts for me were Half Past Dead and The Lucky Bones. I’ll be keen to see what our enigmatically monikored author does next. Cool name – cool collection. 4.5 out of 5

Psychoanalytical collection of 11 short stories.
A walk in the dark, seedy, scheming mind of an altered psyche that can do anything with incredible odds against them. Eleven stories with a style of pulp noir fiction. The stories can be read randomly or from cover to cover. I am not a fan of short stories, however these are an exception. I really did “Dig it”. Crime stories with a hint of dark comedy and panache. I would read more, that I am certain. 4 out of 5 stars
